As Denmark’s second largest university of applied sciences, VIA University College (VIA) offers a variety of accredited programs. VIA employs approximately 2100 staff – academic and non-academic. VIA consist of eight campuses geographically dispersed in the Central Denmark Region. With more than 18.500 full-time students, VIA offers more than forty educational programmes across eleven departments within six professional main fields: – Education and Social Studies; – Health; – Business; – Design; – Film and Animation; – Technology and Construction. In addition to the full-time students, VIA annually has approximately 20,000 registered participants in continuing education programmes, diplomas, courses etc.. The Butterfly Project is anchored in R&D Centre Pedagogy and education, in research program Children’s wellbeing and the research program for Learning and Digital Technologies (LIT).

Herning Kommune, Børn og Læring, Herning, Denmark

Herning municipality has a population size of approx. 90,000 citizens and 26 ECEC-institutions which accommodates children from 9 months to approx. 6 years. Four nurseries participate in the Butterfly Project: Højgaard Børnehus, Haderup Skole- og Børnehus, Klatretræet and Børnehuset Brændgård. The four nurseries accommodate children in many different life positions, and they all have a strong focus on vulnerable children and a professional learning practice for them. Overall, they work based on the national goals in “the new strengthened curriculum – all children must participate” which has been translated into 2 political targets in Herning municipality which are expressed: 1) All children must become as skilled as they can 2) All children must be part of a community. This is also reflected in the strategy for meaningful communities for children in nurseries, kindergartens, schools and other institutions.

The University consists of nineteen Faculties, each specialized in an academic field. The Butterfly project is anchored in the department of Educational Sciences, faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences.

Asociatia FDP-Protagonisti in educatie, Bucharest, Romania

Asociatia FDP-Protagonisti in educatie is a non-govermental organization in Bucharest, Romania. For over 26 years, FDP-Protagonists in Education has been working with children from disadvantaged backgrounds and their families, based on the vision that “education changes lives”. The ambition is to support vulnerable people to be autonomous and have healthy lives. FDP-Protagonists aims to promote equal access to education and prevent school abandonment among children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Social Sports School, an initiative run with the aid of the Real Madrid Foundation for over 8 years offers 115 children from 3 district in Bucharest the chance to socialize and develop a healthier lifestyle, while also receiving aid and motivation with their schoolwork. FDP-Protagonists also supports children from disadvantaged rural areas by aiding in establishing educational services that meet their needs and enable them to continue their educational journey. finally, FDP-Protagonists has established a WONDER day center. Here, a multidisciplinary team of specialists provides services ranging from counseling and speech therapy

Lizuca Day Center, Directia Generala De Asistenta Sociala Si Protectia Copilului Sector 3, Bucharest, Romania

The mission of the “Lizuca” Day Center is to prevent the abandonment and family separation of preschool children with disabilities by providing care, education, recreation-socialization, counseling, development of independent life skills during the day and school guidance for children. “Lizuca” Day Center also support activities, counseling, education, etc. for parents / legal representatives, as well as for other people who take care of these children. The beneficiaries of the social services provided by the “Lizuca” Day Center are the disabled children of citizens with domicile or residence in sector 3 of Bucharest, aged between 0-7 years, with a high risk of abandonment or separation of the child from their parents, with a deficient socio-economic situation of the family, as well as children in foster care. Lizuca is a part of the social assistance measures in the field of child protection in The General Directorate of Social Assistance and Child Protection of sector 3.

Universidad Pablo De Olavide, Seville, Spain

The University Pablo de Olavide (UPO, Seville) is a public university committed to offer high quality education. UPO is located in a single campus in Seville and combines teaching and research providing the knowledge, the abilities and the skills necessary for the fields of professions and the labormarked. UPO has a teaching staff of 1.089; 10.325 bachelor’s degree students; 2.631 postgraduate students; 6 faculties; 1 higher polytechnic school; 15 departments; and 11 research centers. The Butterfly project is anchored in the Faculty of Social Sciences. The participating researchers has prolonged experience in the field socio-educative intervention through different Community Engaged Research and Service Learning (SL) projects and participate in different EU projects related to the integration of immigrant population through education.

Providencia de Jesús-María, Seville, Spain

Providencia de Jesús-María is a nursery school (0-6 years) located in the neighborhood of Tres Mil Viviendas in the province of Seville. Most of the population in the area is in varying degrees of social exclusion. It is a young neighborhood, with a large number of inhabitants of school age (17.45% under 16 years of age). Providencia de Jesús-María has 19 employees and 153 pupils and is part of the Area Education Plan, which seeks to respond to the high rate of absenteeism, dropout and school failure, building an inclusive school for all ages, as the data on school absenteeism are alarming, reaching 60% absenteeism in the area during COVID-19. Providencia de Jesús-María seeks to respond to this problem through participation in working groups, collaboration with the absenteeism sub-commission, collaboration with the area’s transit group to monitor pupils and carrying out activities that allow families to participate in the center and in the educational process of their children: Project ¿hablamos?, Semana de las culturas.

C.E.I.P Andalucía, Seville, Spain

The C.E.I. P Andalucia is a public center of nursery and primary school located in the southern part of Seville. The center has 124 children enrolled and 22 teachers. One of the main characteristics of the center is that it is a ghetto center where Roma ethnic group represents more than 90% of the students. The center welcomes children and families in social exclusion situations, and is a learning community since 2006, meaning that the center based on a set of successful educational actions aims to improve social and educational transformation.  The goal is to ensure the school success for all students by improving the participation of different stakeholders in the local community. To ensure this participation in the center, a series of management structures and democratic organizations have been created. In addition, a collaboration network has been created with different public and private partners.
